American Chestnut. It sprouts from roots. The bark becomes broken into light gray, broad flat ridges, which often have a spiral course aroound the trunk. Found in the <quarter>east</quarter>ern portion of <native>Ohio</native>, from Erie southward to Franklin and Cermount.
