Running Blind

The Black Flag Theme

by L. Shelby

When I made my vow to the Black Flag I
Was fleeing a life as a slave (alt: fled a dull and drab slog to the grave)
I thought that I'd pay with my life's blood but
It's my soul that the space sirens crave.

Running blind through the void, shackled by my own oaths
To the dust motes that dance round the stars
We're the fastest alive, but it isn't enough
I can't ever outrun my own scars.

So I live in a world twenty meters wide
As we rip through a vast stellar sea
And the treasures we plunder are food and air
Is this what they call liberty?

Running blind through the void, shackled by my own oaths
To the dust motes that dance round the stars
We're the fastest alive, but it isn't enough
I can't ever outrun my own scars.

When you can't see where you are headed,
And what lies behind is a blur
It won't matter where you are going, or why
All reasons seem vague and obscure.

But the stars speed on by, and the dark falls fast
As we drive through the layers of space
'Neath a buccaneer's flag, I can heed their call
And all of the cosmos embrace

We're condemned to the night, there is no going back
It's a sentence infinity long
As a pirate I've learned wealth and freedom are lies
But this darkness is where I belong

As a pirate I've learned wealth and freedom are lies
But this darkness is where I belong
